Oregon Trail II
A modern Windows build · version 3.0.0
The 1996 classic, rebuilt for today's Windows: the original game's own rules and pictures, with its bugs, crashes and memory leaks fixed, sound that plays through modern audio, autosaves, and a List of Legends you can share!
The two are the same game. The Online Edition sends each finished game's score to the List of Legends and shows the top ten from around the trail; the Offline Edition keeps its list on your own computer.
Getting started
- You need Oregon Trail II's own data files (
OregonII.Dat,OregonII.Engand the rest of the game's folder); they are not included here. - Put the downloaded
.exein the game'sDATAfolder, next to those files, and run it.
Version 3.0.0
Changes
- Now using C instead of C++ (whole rewrite).
- All files can now be loaded from the DATA directory. Meaning that you can put the executable anywhere and point it at the DATA dir.
Fixes
- Clicking on a screen with text fields (the store, for example) no longer reports untouched fields as edited.
- Losing the last ox (or mule) of the team you were using, to death or a trade, no longer leaves the game reading a deleted animal.
- Searching for fruit and vegetables against scurvy finds 2-25 pounds, as in 1.3, and gathering one pound says "1 pound".
- Fixed a bug in Replays
- Fixed a race condition in the music player
- A force save inside a town can now be loaded
- A small memory leak fixed in the map outline
- When doing Quick Start, a starting package is no longer offered
- The MacRoman 0x80 character now converts
Version 2.2.2
Changes
- Version 1.3 DATA can now be loaded.
- The QuickTime movies play without QuickTime.
- The Diary records every item stolen, burned, lost in a river or found, not just the first few.
- A long day in the Diary continues on the next page instead of being cut off.
- The game opens straight on the title screen. File > Play Intro plays the intro.
- When you can't go hunting, the game says what's missing (gunpowder, firearms, bullets or shot), used-up ammunition leaves the inventory.
- Tab no longer dings in the game's text fields.
- Searching for fruit and vegetables against scurvy finds 2-25 pounds, as in 1.3.
Version 2.2.1
Fixes
- Videos (like the ferry crossing) no longer flash in the enlarged windows.
- Waiting or resting counts the days up in the bottom bar again.
- The online List of Legends at the end of a game includes the game you just finished.
- No more "GetElement" error when talking to someone after stopping the wagon on the trail.
Version 2.2.0
New
- The Party health window opens where you last left it.
Fixes
- A window restored onto a monitor with different display scaling now lands exactly where it was left.
- Talking to someone at a landmark can no longer read a conversation the landmark does not have.
Version 2.1.0
New
- Options > Window Size: play at 1x, 2x, 3x or 4x scale.
- Options > Window Size > Scale Mouse Pointer: the pointer grows with the window.
- Sharp on high-DPI screens (125%, 150%, ...): Windows no longer blurs the game up.
- A new save format (2.0): an illness's two follow-up illnesses are stored separately, and the random-number position has its own place. Saves from older versions and from the original game still load.
Gameplay fixes
- Random rolls are fair: a 1-in-10,000 chance no longer came up 22% too often.
- A hunt that hits nothing still uses the bullets fired.
- A bad reputation costs up to 100 points at the end of the game, as intended (it never cost more than 50).
- The general store's ham no longer copies the line above it: it is stocked half the time, as the store's list says.
- Loading a save no longer refills opened food.
- Loading a save no longer resets spoilage.
Crash and memory fixes
- Answering an event about an animal that had already died or wandered off no longer crashes.
- A "wait for the ferry" left over from one game no longer carries into a game loaded afterwards.
- Landmarks without a river no longer use unset ferry and toll prices or crossing pictures.
- An event with no outcome text no longer stops the game with an error.
- Damaged or cut-off save files are refused instead of crashing.
- The message queues are no longer used after they were freed.
- Corrupt landmark data can no longer write past its tables.
- A missing video no longer pops up an MCI error box.
Other fixes

- Cash in a save is rounded to the cent.
- Save files contain only the game's data (unused space held leftover memory).

- File > Save works anywhere in a game.
- Autosave once per landmark per day (Help > Autosave).
- New Game: a seed field, a difficulty choice with a Random button, and typed companion ages.
- The random seed and position are stored in saves, so a seed always gives the same game.
- Every run is recorded;
/replay <file>plays it back exactly (checkpoints verified, then continues live). - Help > Debug State shows the game's internal state.
- A crash writes a minidump and a text summary next to the executable.
- Online Edition: a finished game's score is sent to the List of Legends at oregontrail.me, and List of Legends shows the online top ten, or the local list when the server can't be reached.
